Church Insurance FAQ
The questions boards, pastors, and administrators ask us most — answered plainly, without the jargon.
Common questions
What is church insurance?
Church insurance is a package of coverages built specifically for houses of worship. A typical program combines property, general liability, workers' compensation, abuse and molestation liability, directors and officers liability, and often commercial auto and cyber. Unlike a generic business policy, a church policy accounts for volunteer labor, youth programs, donated property, pastoral counseling, and buildings that sit largely empty six days a week.
Do we really need a specialist church carrier?
Usually, yes. Standard commercial carriers can technically write a house of worship, but carriers with a religious-organization program build coverage around the exposures that actually generate church claims — volunteers, youth programs, abuse and molestation allegations, older buildings. As an independent agency we compare specialist and standard markets, so you see which is the better fit for your organization.
Are volunteers covered by our insurance?
It depends on the coverage. General liability generally responds when a volunteer injures a third party. Volunteer injuries themselves are usually excluded from workers' compensation, which covers paid employees — many churches add volunteer accident coverage to fill that gap. We flag this on every quote.
How much does church insurance cost?
There's no single price — it depends on your building's replacement value and age, geography and weather exposure, payroll and staffing, volunteer count, programs like preschool or youth trips, van use, facility rentals, and claims history. Our cost guide walks through what actually moves the number.
Can we switch carriers mid-policy?
Yes. Most commercial policies can be cancelled mid-term with a pro-rata return of unearned premium, though it's usually cleanest to move at renewal. We normally start shopping 60 to 90 days ahead of your renewal date so there's time to compare properly and avoid a gap in coverage.
How long does a quote take?
The application takes a few minutes. A licensed church insurance specialist contacts you within one business day, and most complete comparisons come back within a few days once the carriers have your building values and payroll information.
Is there any cost or obligation to compare?
None. We're paid by the carrier if you choose to place coverage with one of them, so comparing costs you nothing and there is no obligation to buy.
Which states are you licensed in?
Licensed in 21 states: New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Ohio, Texas, California, Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, Michigan, Kansas, Kentucky, Arizona and Nevada. If you're outside those states, still reach out — we'll confirm your options when we contact you.
Does property insurance cover our pipe organ?
Yes, most policies can schedule pipe organs, pianos, and other specialty items at agreed values so they're properly protected.
What if our building is historic?
Historic buildings often need agreed-value coverage and specialized carriers familiar with restoration costs and irreplaceable craftsmanship.
Are outdoor structures like sheds or crosses covered?
Detached structures can typically be added to your policy; let your agent know about anything on the property beyond the main building.
Do we need a certificate of insurance for a rented venue?
Most venues and lenders require one; we can typically issue certificates of insurance the same day you request them.
Are volunteers covered under general liability?
Yes, general liability typically extends to volunteer activities performed on behalf of the organization.
Does this cover off-site mission trips or outreach events?
Coverage can often be extended to off-site activities; let your agent know about your full calendar of events.
Do we need workers' comp if we only have a few paid staff?
Most states require coverage once you have even one employee; requirements vary, so confirm your state's threshold with your agent.
Are our volunteers covered under workers' comp?
Volunteer treatment varies by state; ask your agent whether supplemental accident coverage is a better fit for volunteers.
What is pay-as-you-go workers' comp?
It calculates premium from actual payroll each pay period instead of an annual estimate, reducing large deposits and audit surprises.
Is this coverage included in general liability?
No, most general liability policies exclude or sharply limit abuse claims, making a dedicated policy essential.
Does this coverage help with prevention, not just claims?
Yes, specialized carriers often provide risk management resources like screening guidelines and training materials.
Who can I talk to confidentially about our current coverage?
Call 1-866-964-6660 to speak with an agent experienced in these sensitive conversations.
Do volunteer board members really need this coverage?
Yes, volunteer leaders can be named personally in lawsuits over governance decisions, even without direct misconduct.
Is employment practices liability included?
It's often packaged with D&O for one premium, covering claims like wrongful termination or discrimination.
Does this cover disputes with denominational leadership?
Many policies can address disputes over bylaws, membership, or denominational matters; ask your agent for specifics.
Is cyber coverage expensive for a small congregation?
Cyber coverage is usually modest relative to the cost of a single incident, and limits are scaled to your size and online giving volume.
Does this cover stolen donation funds?
Yes, cybercrime coverage typically addresses funds stolen through wire fraud, phishing, or compromised giving platforms.
What happens if our records are held for ransom?
Ransomware coverage can help with recovery costs and restoring systems and data after an attack.
What determines how much our church pays for insurance?
Your building's replacement value and age, geography and weather exposure, payroll and staffing, volunteer count, programs like preschool or youth trips, van use, facility rentals, counseling ministry, and your claims history all factor in.
Does general liability cost the same as a full package?
No — general liability alone is a narrower piece of coverage than a full package that also includes property and workers' compensation, so it's priced differently. Ask your agent for a quote that reflects your specific program.
What should a church look for in an insurance company?
A program written for religious organizations: meaningful abuse and molestation limits, ordinance-and-law coverage, volunteer protection, replacement-cost valuation on an older building, and claims people who have handled church losses before.
Is a specialist program better than a standard commercial policy?
Often, but not always. Specialist programs contemplate volunteers, youth programs, and abuse allegations by design; some standard markets compete well for simple, newer facilities. The reliable answer is to compare both on coverage, not on price alone.
What does a small church insurance package typically include?
Most small congregations combine general liability, property or contents coverage, abuse & molestation coverage, and workers' compensation once they have paid staff, with D&O available as an affordable add-on for the board.
Does a small church that rents still need insurance?
Yes: liability (your landlord will require it), contents coverage, and abuse coverage for children's programs. Renting removes the property risk on the building itself, not the liability that comes with hosting people.
